A counsellor in Cairns

I’ve lived in Cairns since mid-2015, after deciding on a tropical sea-change for my own wellbeing. I moved to Australia from the UK in 2005, so I’m amazed it took me so long to get up here. Cairns suits me because the warm, sunny weather encourages an outdoors lifestyle. That means I’m motivated to exercise and spend time in nature. And honestly, I love the heat! It’s a great excuse to slow life down a notch or two and focus on the things that really matter. And, of course, the warm, sunny locals with their laid-back approach to life are the icing on the cake.

My career pathway

I’m a Level-2 registered counsellor with a professional and educational background in both psychology and teaching. I kick-started my career with a psychology degree followed by roles in trauma counselling and case management. I then took a 12-year detour into teaching, working with fascinating people from every corner of the world. After becoming an Australian citizen I came full-circle back to counselling, completing a Master of Counselling and further specialist training. People fascinate me, and there’s no privilege quite like the privilege of being trusted with someone’s complex inner world.

Off the counsellor’s couch

While I’m not on the couch, I like to spend my spare time walking, running, reading, writing, cooking for eager tummies, and cuddling my cats. I think sustainable, resilient wellbeing involves having work you find meaningful, and enough leisure time to spend quality time with family and friends. It also means taking care of your body and mind, being creative, and learning new things.
